In part 1 of our guide to wedding dress fabrics we looked closely at the characteristics of lace and Mikado. Now we shine the spotlight on two fabrics which are both 'plain' but have very different qualities. Introducing Crepe and Chiffon.
CREPE - With its soft touch characteristics, a small amount of stretch and matt touch, crepe is favoured for its luxurious, slightly textured finish and excellent handle. It drapes superbly, effortlessly skimming the natural curves of your body without clinging. There are various types of crepe, one particular type which is a winner for bridal dresses is satin backed crepe, it adds an extra level of comfort and drape. Crepe is a perfect choice for sleek modern silhouettes, magical for sheath styles and also perfect for a soft trumpet shaped skirt. The smooth flow creates a flattering, figure skimming shape while still feeling incredibly comfortable. This easy to wear fabric can be teamed with other decorative elements such as lace and beading to elevate the overall look further. Crepe is perfect for a bride who wishes to embrace a modern style whilst valuing being comfortable all day long.
CHIFFON - Fluid, drapey, soft and floaty. Chiffon is fabulous for the bride who wishes to have a full skirt without the weight as it is light and conveys romance. It is sheer, airy and extremely soft. Chiffon is great gathered at the waistline as it doesn't add bulk, or it works just as beautifully flared from the waist seam. Teamed with cotton rich laces it can be designed to give a very bohemian vibe. Chiffon is often a popular choice with brides who have chosen to marry in warmer climates as it is very lightweight, perfect for beach weddings. If you like the feeling of freedom of movement you might be a fan of this versatile fabric as it moves easily and does not restrain the wearer in any way. Not only is chiffon wonderful for A-line silhouette skirts it can create the most statement sleeves too.
